Cash for clunker appliances set to make its debut Spring 2010 in states such as New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Oregon. These states will manage the cash for clunker appliance rebate programs for residents who purchase Energy Star appliances to replace their older appliances. Individual states have set their own eligibility requirements for determining which type of appliances will be rebated.
New York Appliance Rebates
New York will begin offering rebates to encourage residents to purchase Energy Star appliances to replace their less efficient appliances in February 2010.
New York eligible products include:
- Refrigerators
- Freezers
- Clothes washers
- High-efficiency appliance package
Higher rebate amounts are available when a package including a refrigerator, clothes washer, and dishwasher is purchased that is more efficient than the Energy Star requirements. When consumers prove recycling the rebates are also higher.
Total funding to New York is $18,700,000.
North Carolina Appliance Rebates
North Carolina will use a two-phase rebate program for the Cash for Clunker Appliances. The first phase of the program will begin in April 2010. This is a limited-time, instant rebate for refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, and dishwashers. The Phase 2 is a mail-in rebate for certain types of water heaters, gas furnaces, and central air conditioners. Phase 2 will begin in June 2010 and will continue until remaining funds are depleted.
North Carolina eligible products include:
- Refrigerators
- Freezers
- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
- Gas storage water heaters
- Gas tankless water heaters
- Electric heat pump water heaters
- Solar water heaters
- Gas furnaces
- Central air conditioners
Retailers in North Carolina are required to recycle clunker appliances in accordance with state laws.
Total funding to North Carolina is $8,849,000.
North Dakota Appliance Rebates
North Dakota will use a mail-in rebate program to administer Cash for Clunkers. This program will begin in April 2010 and will run until funds are exhausted.
North Dakota eligible products include:
- Refrigerators
Pre-registration is required. This may be done online. North Dakota requires consumers to recycle their clunker refrigerators to receive a rebate.
Total funding to North Dakota is $615,000.
Ohio Appliance Rebates
Ohio will use a mail-in rebate program to encourage residents to replace inefficient appliances with new Energy Star rated and ultra-efficient models. The program will begin in March 2010 and will end when funds are depleted.
Ohio eligible products include:
- Refrigerators
- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
- Gas storage water heaters
- Electric heat pump water heaters
Ohio requires proof that consumers have properly disposed of their clunker appliances.
Total funding provided to Ohio is $11,020,000.
Oklahoma Appliance Rebates
Oklahoma will implement a mail-in rebate program to encourage residents to use the cash for clunkers program for new Energy Star qualified appliances. Rebates will be available starting April 2010, to coordinate with Earth Day activities. The program will end when all funds are depleted.
Oklahoma eligible products include:
- Refrigerators
- Clothes washer
- Room air conditioners
- Electric heat pump water heaters
- Solar water heaters (electric backup)
- Gas furnaces
- Central air conditioners
- Geothermal heat pumps
Proof of proper disposal of the clunker unit is required to obtain a rebate.
Total funding to Oklahoma is $3,495,000.
Oregon Appliance Rebates
Oregon will use an instant rebate program to enable residents who meet low-income requirements to replace non-functioning or low-efficiency furnaces and heat pumps with new Energy Star qualified models. The program begins in December 2009 and will end when all funds are depleted.
Only people who are at or below 60% of the Oregon median income will receive vouchers to purchase the qualified heating systems. Incentives will be offered by program partners to cover the full installed cost of furnaces and heat pumps.
Eligible products include
- Gas furnaces
- Air source heat pumps
Contractors will remove and recycle the clunker appliances.
Total funding to Oregon is $3,636,000.
