State specific information about which appliances are eligible for rebates in Missouri, Minnesota, Mississippi, Michigan and Montana for the cash for appliance clunkers.

The states of Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri and Montana will begin administering the cash for clunker appliance rebate programs for residents who purchase new appliances. Each state has set its own criteria for determining which type of appliances are eligible for rebate.

Michigan Appliance Rebates

Michigan will use a mail-in rebate program to encourage residents to update old appliances with new Energy Star rated and ultra-efficient appliances. The program will begin in February 2010. Michigan requires the consumer to certify state residency and that the rebated product is a replacement for a clunker appliance.

Michigan will recognize the following appliances as eligible for rebates:

  • Refrigerators
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Propane Condensing Water Heaters
  • Propane Storage Water Heaters
  • Propane Tankless Water Heaters
  • Solar Water Heaters
  • Oil Furnaces
  • Propane Furnaces

Michigan encourages residents to recycle the clunker appliances. People who receive rebates must certify the clunker appliance was removed from the residence.

Michigan has received a total funding $9,598,000.

Minnesota Appliance Rebates

Minnesota will use a mail-in rebate program to encourage residents to replace old appliances with new Energy Star appliances. The program is scheduled to begin in March 2010 and will be ongoing until all funds are depleted.

Minnesota will recognize the following appliances as eligible for rebates:

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers

Consumers are required to "self-certify" proper recycling of replaced clothes washers and dish washers. Consumer are required to provide proof of proper recycling of replaced refrigerators and freezers, and can receive higher rebates for doing so.

Minnesota has received a total funding $5,009,000.

Mississippi Appliance Rebates

The State of Mississippi will use a mail-in rebate program to encourage residents to replace old appliances with new Energy Star appliances. The program is scheduled to begin in April 2010 and will be ongoing until all funds are depleted.

Mississippi will recognize the following appliances as eligible for rebates:

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Room air conditioners
  • Gas storage water heaters
  • Gas tankless water heaters
  • Electric heat pump water heaters
  • Gas Furnaces
  • Central air conditioners
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Geothermal heat pumps

Participating retailers, contractors and vendors will be required to properly recycle appliances during the promotional timeframe.

Mississippi has received a total funding $2,820,000.

Missouri Appliance Rebates

Missouri will use a mail-in rebate program to encourage residents to replace old appliances with new Energy Star appliances. The program is scheduled to begin in April 2010 and will be ongoing until all funds are depleted. The start date will coincide with the state's Energy Star sales tax holiday.

Missouri will recognize the following appliances as eligible for rebates:

  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Gas condensing water heaters
  • Gas storage water heaters
  • Gas tankless water heaters
  • Electric heat pump water heaters
  • Solar water heaters (electric and gas back-up)
  • Gas furnaces
  • Central air conditioners
  • Air source heat pumps

Missouri residents must purchase the appliances at retail locations that have agreed to participate in the program. The consumer must also provide proof of recycling or haul away of the clunker appliances to receive the rebates. Preapproval can reserve a rebate for the consumer before they purchase their item through a retailer and installation contractor.

Missouri has received a total funding $5,672,000.

Montana Appliance Rebates

Montana will use a mail-in rebate program to encourage residents to replace old appliances with new Energy Star appliances. The program is scheduled to begin in April 2010 and will be ongoing until all funds are depleted. Reservations are accepted in advance for residents who apply.

Montana will recognize the following appliances as eligible for rebates:

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers

Montana does not require consumers to show proof but recycling of the clunker appliances is encouraged.

Montana has received a total funding of $928,000.
